A fierce political storm has erupted after the ruling United Democratic Alliance launched a blistering attack on former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of hypocrisy, political sabotage and secretly inciting Kenyan youth against President William Ruto’s administration.
In a strongly worded 12-page statement issued on Tuesday, May 26, UDA dismissed Uhuru’s recent remarks offering to help the government navigate the country’s growing economic and political challenges, saying the retired Head of State had long abandoned the spirit of statesmanship.
The ruling party claimed that shortly after the 2022 General Election, President Ruto personally reached out to Uhuru seeking cooperation and counsel in the interest of national unity and continuity, but was allegedly met with hostility and political bitterness.
“Kenyans should know that when the country needed collective effort and national resolve, President William Ruto reached out to you. He sought cooperation for the sake of national stability and continuity. You refused,” part of the statement read.
UDA Accuses Uhuru of Fueling Hostility Against Government
The party further accused Uhuru of orchestrating resistance against the Kenya Kwanza administration from behind the scenes immediately after handing over power at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
According to UDA, the former president has spent the last three years undermining Ruto’s leadership, mobilizing political hostility and quietly fueling public anger against the government.
In perhaps its sharpest accusation yet, the ruling party claimed Uhuru has been exploiting the frustrations of young Kenyans grappling with unemployment, a struggling economy and the high cost of living to advance what it termed a personal political vendetta.
“You operate from behind the scenes, mobilising political hostility, fueling public anger and quietly hoping the country fails,” the statement charged.
UDA also accused Uhuru of attempting to sanitize opportunistic political figures and repackage them as alternative leaders ahead of future political contests.
Fuel Crisis Comments Trigger Fresh Political Fallout
The explosive response came after Uhuru distanced himself from the ongoing fuel supply and economic concerns facing the country, insisting that the responsibility to fix national problems rests squarely with those currently in office.
The former president reportedly urged government leaders to stop dragging his name into present-day crises and instead focus on providing solutions for struggling Kenyans.
Uhuru also warned leaders against turning national challenges into tribal or ethnic battles, cautioning that divisive politics risked deepening tensions in the country.
However, UDA interpreted the remarks as a calculated political attack disguised as statesmanship.
Bitter Uhuru-Ruto Fallout Continues to Shape Kenyan Politics
The latest exchange lays bare the deepening political hostility between Uhuru and Ruto, whose once-formidable alliance spectacularly collapsed before the 2022 elections.
After serving together for nearly a decade, Uhuru dramatically broke ranks with his deputy and backed opposition leader Raila Odinga in the last presidential race, triggering one of the most bitter political divorces in Kenya’s recent history.
Since taking office, Ruto’s allies have repeatedly accused Uhuru of maintaining influence within sections of the opposition and the state establishment in a bid to frustrate the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The escalating war of words now threatens to intensify Kenya’s already charged political atmosphere as the government faces mounting pressure over the economy, rising public discontent and growing youth unrest.
