Residents of Kaliwa village, Waitaluk Ward in Trans Nzoia woke up Monday morning to the grim discovery of a mass grave outside a mud-walled house.

According to reports, the shallow grave contains an undetermined number of bodies. The tragedy has prompted inquiries regarding the circumstances surrounding the bodies.

Authorities were notified, and officials from the Kitale Police Station came on the spot to begin exhuming the dead.

Local people are stunned as they await more information on the incident, which has shocked the normally calm community. The grisly finding has prompted questions about how long the remains had been buried and the circumstances surrounding their deaths. At the time of writing, two people had been apprehended in connection with the incident.

The discovery brought back memories of Shakahola, where authorities excavated over 100 dead from mass graves. Controversial preacher Paul McKenzie  is suspected of orchestrating the fatalities by manipulating his followers into fasting to death. Since the discovery, more than 100 bodies have been excavated from the infamous farm, with more suspected still to be buried.
