Kenya has taken a bold step toward cementing its place as a regional technology powerhouse following the launch of the Microsoft Elevate AI National Skilling Initiative, a transformative program spearheaded by Stanbic Kenya Foundation in partnership with Microsoft, Pathways Technologies, and Konza Technopolis.
The initiative, already underway across multiple counties, has trained 152 participants drawn from Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Taita Taveta, and Embu. It targets trainers and institutions, equipping them with both foundational and practical artificial intelligence (AI) skills tailored to real-world application.
Designed to respond to the evolving needs of Kenya’s workforce, the program aligns closely with the country’s Digital Masterplan and Vision 2030, reinforcing ambitions to position Kenya as a leading hub for AI talent in Africa.
By leveraging Stanbic Kenya Foundation’s expansive grassroots networks—including SMEs, youth groups, and county-level institutions—the partnership is extending digital opportunities beyond urban centres into underserved and informal sectors.
“Digital literacy remains a core pillar of our work,” said Mercy Githanji, Head of Stanbic Kenya Foundation. “Through collaborations with TVETs and vocational training centres, we are building instructor capacity to deliver skills that enhance employability, entrepreneurship, and meaningful participation in the digital economy.”
The initiative also builds on the Foundation’s broader digital inclusion agenda. Since 2021, Stanbic Kenya Foundation has partnered with various stakeholders to equip women, youth, and MSMEs with critical 21st-century skills. Its flagship Future ni Digital platform has contributed to training over 250,000 Kenyans since 2019, spanning basic to advanced digital competencies.
Microsoft, through its AI skills leadership, emphasized the importance of localized, practical training. “Working with partners like Stanbic Foundation allows us to deliver community-based learning beyond major cities,” said Winnie Karanu, Microsoft AI Skills Director. “We’ve customized content to reflect key sectors such as agriculture, entrepreneurship, and small business operations to ensure real impact.”
Beyond numbers, the initiative underscores a broader vision: building resilient communities, unlocking economic opportunities, and preparing Kenyans to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.
As Kenya accelerates its digital transformation journey, collaborations of this scale signal a future where innovation is inclusive, skills are accessible, and no community is left behind.
