Embakasi East lawmaker Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has been nominated for a conferment of an Honorary Doctorate Degree by an African country University.
Weldios University of Management and Technology, based in the Benin Republic, extended this invitation in a letter dated October 31, 2023, as seen by Nairobi News.
The University has invited Babu Owino to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree (PhD Honoris Causa) in Political Leadership at a ceremony scheduled for November 11, 2023.
The letter is addressed to the lawmaker, who is affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

The addressee and the letterhead of the invitation, signed by Dr Magnus U. Kel, the University’s Registrar and Chair of the Selection Board, read in part: “Hon Babu Owino Paul Ongili, Member of the Kenyan Parliament…Formal Notification and Invitation to The Weldios University Convocation Ceremony; The Weldios Honorary Doctorate Degree Conferment.”
The letter further explains: “May I, on behalf of the Senate and Board of Weldios University, formally inform you that, upon your nomination and careful evaluation and scrutiny of your profile, antecedence, and contributions to society, “The Weldios Selection Committee,” the University shall be conferring the prestigious Weldios Honorary Doctorate Degree (PhD Honoraris Causa) in Political Leadership at the Weldios University eagle set convocation ceremony in Cotonou, Benin Republic.”
The conferment ceremony is scheduled for November 11, 2023, and Babu Owino has also been requested to deliver a keynote address.
The university expressed, “Kindly accept this as the University’s modest effort at recognizing your salient role in Africa’s Leadership.”
The vocal MP has been at the forefront, championing the rights and representation of youths in various leadership capacities, since his time as a student leader at the University of Nairobi (UoN).
He has also fought for the early disbursement of Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds to students.
Serving his second term as the Embakasi lawmaker, Babu Owino is ranked among the best MPs in supporting education through the allocation of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) kitty, part of which is channeled to needy students.
The legislator appreciates the recognition by Weldios University and the conferment of the Honorary Doctorate Degree (PhD Honoraris Causa) in Political Leadership, saying, “I take this opportunity to thank WELDIOS UNIVERSITY in BENIN REPUBLIC for this great honor.

With this recognition, Babu Owino will now be addressed as Dr Babu Owino.
He joins a list of political and corporate leaders who have been recognized by various universities for their immense contributions to society.
The owner and proprietor of Royal Media Services (RMS), which also owns Citizen TV, Mr Samuel Kamau Macharia, better known as Dr SK Macharia, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Kenyatta University (KU) in 2011 for his significant contributions to the growth of the media industry in Kenya.
He is now referred to as Dr SK Macharia.
