A fresh political push is gathering momentum in Siaya County, with supporters of Dr Nicholas Kochogo Kut mounting pressure on the former military cadet and current County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Tourism to enter the 2027 gubernatorial race.

The emerging campaign, driven by grassroots mobilisers, boda boda operators, women’s groups and community elders, is positioning Kut as a potential contender for the coveted Siaya County governor’s seat, potentially reshaping an increasingly competitive political landscape.

For his supporters, the message is straightforward: Alego Usonga must have a seat at the table when Siaya’s next political leadership is negotiated.

Kut, a son of a former colonial chief, has cultivated a reputation as a grassroots mobiliser and a political operator whose influence has endured through successive administrations since 2013. His supporters now believe his administrative experience, community networks and growing visibility in county affairs make him a credible candidate for higher office.

Alego Usonga demands its place in the 2027 succession battle

The push for Kut comes against the backdrop of shifting political calculations across Siaya’s six sub-counties, as prospective gubernatorial contenders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Engineer Nicholas Odero Gumbo is associated with Rarieda, while Ugenya MP David Ochieng has established a formidable political base in Ugenya. Governor James Orengo’s future political direction also remains a subject of intense speculation as the county’s political landscape evolves.

Against this backdrop, sections of Alego Usonga are increasingly calling for one of their own to enter the contest, arguing that the sub-county’s demographic weight should translate into meaningful representation in the county’s top leadership.

Kut’s supporters contend that Alego Usonga should no longer be content with cheering from the sidelines while other political blocs negotiate the distribution of senior positions and influence.

“We must get our fair share. Alego Usonga is a major political constituency, and our people want representation at the highest level,” said Mzee Laban, who hails from the Kakan sub-clan.

A boda boda operator at Ngiya stage, identified as Reagan, echoed the sentiment, declaring: “Sisi ndio tuko kubwa in Siaya. We must get some slice of the cake.”

The remarks reflect a growing argument among Kut’s supporters that regional balance, political inclusion and equitable access to county resources should feature prominently in the 2027 succession debate.

However, the claim that Alego Usonga has never held the deputy governor’s position since devolution began remains a political assertion that requires verification against the county’s leadership history.

From public works to tourism: Kut’s administrative credentials

Kut’s supporters are also banking on his record in public service, particularly his previous role in the public works docket and his current position in charge of tourism.

During his time in public works, Kut is credited by supporters with championing the development of roadside Jua Kali shades and participating in the inspection of access-road projects across various wards.

Those activities, they argue, helped him establish working relationships with boda boda operators, informal-sector workers, community groups and residents who regularly interact with county officials.

His networks reportedly extend beyond Alego Usonga into Ugenya, Gem, Bondo and other parts of Siaya County, giving his supporters a foundation on which to build a countywide political campaign.

In the tourism docket, Kut’s supporters point to his efforts to advance a tourism master plan aimed at positioning Siaya as a destination for eco-tourism and encouraging greater participation by players across the tourism value chain.

They believe the experience could become a central pillar of his campaign should he declare his candidacy, particularly if he can demonstrate measurable gains in investment, employment, tourism infrastructure and local enterprise development.

The extent of those gains, however, will ultimately be judged by the available project records, implementation milestones and their impact on ordinary residents.

A political network that cuts across community groups

Beyond his administrative portfolio, Kut is being presented by his supporters as a politician who understands the importance of grassroots organisation.

Boda boda associations, women’s groups and older community members are among the constituencies said to be warming to his possible candidacy. His previous public participation engagements are also cited as opportunities through which he interacted with residents and developed networks across different parts of the county.Kut K’Ochogo 2022 campaign poster

His background as a former military cadet and his experience in public administration are being woven into a political narrative built around discipline, management and the ability to navigate changing political circumstances.

Supporters describe him as a seasoned political tactician who has maintained relevance through successive political administrations. Critics, however, may question whether survival across different political establishments necessarily translates into the electoral strength required to win a countywide contest.

For now, the crucial question is whether Kut’s extensive community networks can be converted into a formal campaign with a clear policy agenda, a countywide coalition and a credible electoral strategy.

Governor or deputy? The high-stakes calculation

Even before a formal declaration, Kut’s name is increasingly being floated in discussions about the possible distribution of senior county leadership positions after the 2027 elections.

Among his supporters, the preferred outcome is an outright gubernatorial bid. Others believe that, should the political arithmetic prove unfavourable, a deputy governor position could offer Alego Usonga an alternative route into the county’s top executive leadership.

The argument is particularly attractive to those who believe that the next administration should reflect a broader geographical and political balance.

Yet the deputy governor’s position is not an automatic consolation prize. Under Kenya’s electoral system, the governor and deputy governor are elected together on a joint ticket. Any negotiations around such a partnership would therefore depend on the candidates’ political strength, coalition arrangements and the ability to build a winning countywide alliance.

Kut’s entry into the race, if confirmed, could consequently influence negotiations among established contenders, especially those seeking to assemble support across Alego Usonga, Gem, Ugenya, Bondo, Rarieda and Ugunja.

It could also complicate efforts by rival camps to secure the backing of influential grassroots networks before the campaign season gathers full momentum.

The 2027 question: Is Kut ready to make the leap?

For Dr Nicholas Kochogo Kut, the emerging mobilisation presents both an opportunity and a test.

His supporters are making the case that Siaya needs an experienced administrator with grassroots connections, a practical development agenda and the ability to bridge community interests.

But a gubernatorial campaign requires more than a strong home-base following. It demands a persuasive countywide message, demonstrable development credentials, financial and organisational capacity, and the ability to withstand scrutiny over public service performance.

Kut must also decide whether to transform the growing calls from his supporters into an unequivocal declaration of intent.

As the 2027 General Election approaches, his political future remains an open question. No formal candidacy or deputy governor arrangement is established by the mobilisation described by his supporters.

Nevertheless, the campaign to position him as a leading voice for Alego Usonga has introduced another variable into Siaya’s unfolding succession contest.

For his backers, the demand is no longer simply about who should become governor. It is about who gets represented, who gets heard and who sits at the table when the county’s next political settlement takes shape.

Will Dr Nicholas Kochogo Kut throw his hat into the gubernatorial ring, negotiate for the deputy governor’s seat, or keep his options open as the political chessboard shifts?

As the countdown to 2027 continues, the answer could help shape the next chapter of Siaya County politics.
